Dear Colleagues,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your active participation in THE 72ND IIW ANNUAL ASSEMBLY AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2019. It was a great honour for me and our company, the Research Institute of Welding, to welcome you to Bratislava in Slovakia for such an important meeting of representatives from 45 countries around the world.

800 participants have demonstrated the importance of meeting face to face and communication in the 21st century, which offers many other electronic communication channels. Meeting in person at working groups and evening social events are proof of the need to exchange scientific skills, experience and knowledge and to build international relationships for successful IIW companies. Our meeting in Bratislava was also very important from the point of view of accepting many important changes that the meeting in Bratislava will enter into the history of IIW.

I would like to wish you and your families all the best and I look forward to seeing you next year in Singapore at THE 73rd IIW ANNUAL ASSEMBLY AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee

Everyone registered for the Annual Assembly can attend the IIW Technical Working Unit sessions of their choice

What is it about? IIW Technical Working Units are groups of specialists covering the large range of technologies, industrial applications and technical/scientific fields related to welding and joining. At the meetings, papers are presented to an audience of peers, followed by proactive discussion and the sharing of knowledge and experience. Papers may be recommended for publication by the IIW in our SCI-rated journal Welding in the World or as books in the IIW Collection.

Do you want to be more than a listener? Here are a few hints on how to maximise your experience:

  1. Get in touch with the Chairs of the Working Units which interest you and ask to be invite to participate as a guest on the collaborative platform and have access to the presented papers.
  2. Contact the IIW Member Society of your country to find out about participating in their delegation. Even as an observer you will find this helps you join the worldwide network more easily.

IIW 2019 welded art photographic exhibition

Delegates can look forward to the welded art photographic exhibition that will be part of the 72nd IIW Annual Assembly in Bratislava. This exhibition will show an artistic spirit of the field of welding.

Photographs of amazing welded art will be staged in the main reception area of the Crowne Plaza Hotel where registration and many of the group meetings will take place. Welded art is a wonderful tool to improve the image of welding and share the beauty of the exceptional artistic work.

The exhibition will therefore showcase the flexibility and versatility of the welding discipline, and how easily it becomes another artistic medium which is capable of expressing delicate and intricate designs and forms.

Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Welding Research Institute and the Slovak Welding Society, I have been granted the honour to invite you again after 40 years to the capital city of Bratislava for the biggest welding event in the world, the 72nd IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference, which will be held from July 7 to 12, 2019.

In 2019, the Welding Research Institute will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding. This will provide the opportunity to explore its 70-year history of research and development of materials, welding equipment, technologies related to the fusing of materials and cooperation with international institutions and organisations such as IIW and EWF.

Although Slovakia is such a small country with only a population of 5 million, it has provided a great deal of innovative knowledge on welding to the whole international community. The name of Professor Čabelka, founder of the Welding Research Institute, is known almost worldwide. This makes us even more eager to welcome you again to such an important event for the welding community in Bratislava in what is our jubilee year.

The main topic of the International Conference and the event in general will be: “New Progressive Materials and Welding Methods in the Automotive Industry”. This topic was chosen on the basis of the fact that new technologies required for the automotive industry will have to be developed in Slovakia, as we are the largest automobile producer per capita in the world. We are organising this event in an effort not only to create a meeting place for experts from all over the world, but also to try and create an unforgettable and friendly atmosphere to allow the greatest possible exchange of information on innovative technologies, new trends in welding and soldering. We want to provide opportunities for creating global contacts and links to support research activities and to reinforce personal relationships and friendships. We are fully aware that by speeding up information technologies and transport options, barriers to the exchange of information and the creation of world-class international teams have already been disrupted, and we hope that our event continues to support this trend.

We have prepared extremely interesting sightseeing tours to places in Slovakia which are well worth seeing, not just for experts, but also for their family members and companions. They are divided into technical, cultural, social and historical themes. The venue is easily accessible from the international airports in Bratislava and Vienna and via our extensive network of motorways. Did you know that these two cities are the closest capital cities in the world, being only 66 kilometres apart? We are trying to ensure that you will not only acquire more professional knowledge, but also learn more about Bratislava and Slovakia.

We look forward to your participation and believe that IIW 2019, as it has previously, will be held in the spirit of a collegial and friendly atmosphere. We will do our best to prepare and organise everything to ensure you enjoy yourselves in Bratislava, in the heart of Europe, and profit from a rich professional, cultural and social programme.

Let’s meet in Bratislava in 2019 – your presence will be a key part in the event’s success!

Peter Durik

Chairman of the Organizing Committee
